James P. Grimes, one of the best known men in Crawfordsville, died Saturday night at the home of his daughter, Mrs.
Glen Harshberger, in Ada, Minn.
Mr. Grimes had gone to Minnesota early in July to visit his daughter's family and shortly after his arrival was taken sick. His illness developed into a complication of diseases and he grew steadily worst until the end came. Sherman Grimes, a son, had gone to Ada to be with his father and was at his bedside when death came.
" Jim" Grimes had been identified with the political and business life of Crawfordsville for many years. Born on a Farm near Shannondale in 1849, he came to this city in early manhood and became a merchant policeman. Later he was placed on the regular police force after serving in that capacity for some time he was made chief of police, which position he filled with great credit for several years. About fourteen years ago he entered the laundry business and was sucessful in this line of endeavor, the present modern laundry just east of the Commerce building standing as a monument to his enterprise and ability.
Mr. Grimes leaves six children to mourn his loss. They are Sherman, Fred, Monte, and Arthur, all of this city; Ralph of Anderson, and Mrs. Glen Harshberger of Ada, Minn.
The body will be brought here for burial and it is expected to arrive Tuesday afternoon. The funeral arrangements have not been completed and will be announced later.
